Saturday 16th July 2011 … I took myself off to Vienna, for one of those seminal moments to watch the public honouring & the final journey of Crown Prince Otto Von Habsburg, who died at the grand age of 98. He was of the long gone era of the end of the Austro-Hungarian empire … once reported as commenting on a football match when Austria vs. Hungary, as “ so who are we playing ? …”
The crowds gathered opposite the huge gothic Cathedral in Stefansplatz, full of ‘Hapsburgers’ coming to pay respects from all over the world, one nearby wearing a soldier boy cap with ‘Austin Texas’ written on, and others dressed in WW2 uniforms holding rifles. A platoon of ‘soldiers’ dressed as 19th Century Hussars and a corp of Pipe & drummers pound out the slow funeral march sounding like the accompaniment to a public execution. A local commented that they last saw something like this ten years ago when the Prince’s Mother died, and this was the end of an era… Austria would never see anything quite like this again.
Watching the blond-haired blue-eyed children dressed in traditional Austrian national dress, was a bit like watching parts of Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will… one felt somehow a part of a time warp and standing in the late 1930’s … The rampant Austrian nationalism was positively tangible, and yet one had to remember that another Son of Austria, (Adolf Hitler,) had actually issued a shoot on sight order to his troops, so that must make Otto one of the good guys… but what else from a Habsburg…
